Later that evening, the foursome trooped over to Willoughby Bar. Lloyd scoped out their surroundings and confirmed that it was a safe enough place, considering the area.

They headed inside with the guys sitting down at the bar, where they could keep watch and guard the exit. Piper headed to a table in the corner.

Barnaby soon entered and sauntered past the fellows. He kept an eye on them, though, and they observed him, too, before he joined Piper at the table.

Piper and Barnaby smiled and greeted each other, shaking hands. But when Barnaby reached to kiss her hand again, she pulled away from him.

He shrugged and sat down. “That’s fair, I suppose.”

He grinned and waved at the guys at the bar, who were peering over. But then they turned away.

“They’re a surly, jealous bunch.” Barnaby remarked, turning to Piper. “Why do you travel with them?”

Piper sighed and told him their tale, including details on what little they knew about Sonya, Cawley, and the seven pieces. Barnaby slowly nodded, absorbing the information, as he and Piper drank a little and watched the crowd around them, too.

“I haven’t had any visions, like you say, but I’ve had some dreams.” Barnaby paused, contemplating them.

“I’m usually running towards or away from something. It involves battles sometimes, or sometimes it’s quite peaceful. I hadn’t known I might be glimpsing another life or two. But it did seem real when I was in the middle of them.” He gulped his drink down heavily. “I wish you had been in them, pretty lady.”

Piper grimaced. “I might’ve been, considering. So you might believe us?” She asked.

“I might believe you, but that doesn’t mean I want to get involved.” Barnaby slammed his drink down.

“My life’s already harsh enough as it is. Why should I get mixed up in some trouble with mages? That’s like a death sentence for me. I’ve got enough going against me. You should see the reward for my capture, the jail sentence I might be facing for my robberies.” Barnaby said.

“Why did you resort to such measures?” Piper asked, staring at him.

“I didn’t have much choice when I was younger. I got kicked out onto the streets when my parents died and joined a gang to stay alive. I was a natural runner, so they trained me as a robber, too, for smash and grabs. As long as I stayed ahead of the constables and fenced the wares without getting caught, I could rest easy with some time to spare. The gang takes care of me in exchange for a fee.”

Barnaby sighed. “I’ve got my own place in a nice, quiet area. No trouble at all, just a few risks, in comparison to what my life could’ve been like without it. Why should I add to my burden?”

Piper shrugged. “Admittedly that does sound good, comparatively speaking. I might’ve wanted a life like that when I was traveling alone on the road. But don’t you feel some kind of connection between us? With the other seven pieces?”

Barnaby grimaced.
